Results Round-Up – Saturday 24th September 2016

The 1st XI secured a convincing 7 – 0 away win in the league versus Fulham Deaf with the goals coming from seven different sources via Zak Graham, Duncan Fraser, Reece Jackson, Nick Raggett,, Paul Mears, Billy Liffen and Paul Whitthread.

The 2nd XI finally secured their first win of the campaign at the 4th attempt, thanks to goals from Player Manager Kyle Moore and the all-important winner, courtesy of an Ollie Hicks, penalty which proved enough to earn all 3 points against Shaftesbury Town at Poplar Road.

The 3rd XI suffered the Ruts only defeat of the day as their depleted squad went down 5 – 0 at division leaders Kingsbrook. Credit to the lads though, as they had a couple of players with knocks starting the match and then had to play out the second period with just 10 men.

The largely youthful 4th XI drew 4 – 4 against Chessington KCFC in a game they could have won. The lads held the lead at 2 – 0 and 3 – 1, before finding themselves level at 3 – 3 and eventually going behind to a completely fortuitous and undeserved own goal. Fortunately the teams overall effort was rewarded with a late equaliser. The Ruts goals came via Myles Wiltshire, Lewis Colebrook, Harry Reeder and Casey Vickery.

Best wishes to the Vets and Junior teams tomorrow.

Results Round-Up – Saturday 17th September 2016

The 1st XI’s away match was cancelled late morning owing to a waterlogged pitch.

The 2nd XI were comprehensively beaten by a very strong Wanderers team as they went down 1 – 7 at home. The Ruts solitary goal came from Andre Robinson.

The 3rd XI also suffered a defeat as they lost 2 – 0 away to Merton Social Reserves.

Which ultimately left Boo-Boo’s newly reformed 4th XI to deliver some bacon in their first game since 2001. The team made up of some Ruts old-timers and a lot of 16 year olds drew 3 – 3 with the goals coming via a Myles Wiltshire brace and a Freddy Paterson strike. Great effort lads.

Best wishes to the Vets and Junior teams tomorrow.

Results Round-Up – Saturday 10th September 2016

The 1st XI got off to a terrific start to their League campaign as they won 3 – 1 at Old Plymouthians FC this afternoon.

Both teams started positively, although it was the Ruts who were successful in applying significant damage to the hosts by securing a 3 – 0 interval lead.

Good work and a deft cross from Lee Poulter led to Zac Graham heading home at the far post on the 25 minute mark and Graham doubled both his and the teams tally in the 38th minute with a well struck effort from outside of the box.

Shortly before the interval Reece Jackson hit a well struck free kick from the left hand side of the OP’s penalty area which curled in nicely close to the right hand post evading the home keeper.

In the second period the Ruts were guilty of not burying the game, as they were unable to convert a large number of chances.

OP’s reduced the arrears courtesy of a deflected free kick, which proved to be the final goal of the game.

This was a sound & solid Ruts performance, which saw a number of very good performances from the players – well done men.

The 2nd XI went down 4 – 3 at Cheam VW FC in their official season opener which was a disappointing result for the lads. The OR’s scorers were Phil Lines, Ollie Hicks and Steve Berry.

Best wishes to the Ruts Juniors tomorrow.

Club Announcement – Richard Lines is forced to retire from playing Football

On behalf of the club I am saddened to announce the enforced retirement from playing of a true Club Legend in Richard Lines.

Richard joined the Ruts ranks way back in 2005 when he promptly secured a 1st XI shirt for the long haul, racking up 282 appearances and scoring 73 club goals along the way, with his incredible strength, determination and commitment to the cause he duly earnt himself the nickname of ‘The Beast’ (way before the far weaker Adebayo Akinfenwa could even think about such an honour!).

Richard also won the prestigious 1st XI Players Player of the Year Award on two occasions, in 2005/06 and again in 2010/11 which also secured him a couple of ‘cheeky’ entries on the Honours Board.

Linesy’s no nonsense approach to playing Football was an excellent asset to the Ruts which saw him regularly torment and scare the living daylights out of many a defender (in his striking days) and many a striker (in his defending days). However, in recent seasons injuries, work and family commitments duly arrived at the fore, which ultimately led to him plying his trade for the more tranquil Old Ruts Vets team on a Sunday morning.

Regretfully and with the above glossy summary out of the way, the reason for Richard’s football retirement is not through choice, but through illness, as he has recently been diagnosed with a benign tumour in the head, which requires imminent surgery. The prognosis is believed to be positive, although not without risk and everyone involved with the Ruts wishes Richard a full and prompt recovery and we all hope to see him back pitch-side soon.

Our thoughts are also with Richard’s wife Dani and indeed the whole of the Lines family at this very worrying time.

** UPDATE from Mike Lines on the 6th September as follows ** ** Brilliant News **

Gents,

He’s out of surgery now and the operation was a success. The whole tumour has been removed.

Hopefully he’ll be back home by the weekend. I’ll try and get up and see him tomorrow. He’s very groggy but on the mend.

Thought you might like to know.

Thanks

Mike
