Results Round Up – Saturday 29th April 2017.

The 1st XI went head to head with West Fulham FC in a close and tightly contested dress rehearsal ahead of the teams meeting in the League Senior Cup Final next weekend. The first period was a close affair, which WFFC narrowly edged on build up and quantity of overall chances. However, their 44th minute opener was a tad fortuitous, as it bounced off Big Steve in Goal to give them the Interval lead.

Pleasingly the Ruts upped their tempo and all round effort in the second period and Paul Mears struck a very sweet sublime effort to level for the Ruts around the hour mark. Soon after this Super Sub Ollie Hicks made an immediate impact as he slotted home at the far post, following a neat team move culminating in a cross from Zac Graham.

The In form Mears then doubled his tally to make it a deserved brace after firing home from an acute angle, to make the final score 3 – 1 to the League Champions.

West Fulham had the opportunity to reduce the arrears from the penalty spot 5 minutes from time, which could have led to an interesting finale. However, Steve Asomaning had other ideas, as he pulled off an excellent save to ensure the Ruts 2 goal advantage remained intact = Well done team.

Erol’s 3rd XI finished their Season with a convincing 5 – 0 victory over Old Plymouthians Res FC, which leaves the lads recent relegation concerns as a forgotten concern. A vibrant hatrick from Benjamin Kennett and goals from Michael Truelove-Dodd and Kilo Moon providing the damage.
Good results today and let’s make sure we have plenty of Ruts support at the Final next week.

Result Round Up – Saturday 22nd April 2017.

We are delighted to report that Erol ‘aka Steve McQueen’ Yilmaz has phenomenally achieved an amazing turnaround to the 3rd XI’s Season.  The Lads were rock bottom of the table at Xmas after losing their first 8 games of the Season. However, in 2017 Yilmaz the Ruts wily old 3rd XI Sea Captain has steadied the Ship to secure 24 points from the last 13 Games including a 3 – 0 win over Worcester Park ‘A’ FC today. Basically, this guarantees safety with a game to spare. The Ruts scorers today were Sam Maclean (2) and Ben Kennett (1).

In his post match Interview Yilmaz simply said ‘Boom’.

Result Round Up – Saturday 15th April 2017.

The 1st XI narrowly lost 3 – 2 to Tooting Bec FC of the Surrey Elite League in a competitive Friendly match at the Hub in an early Kick-Off today.

The Hosts took the lead in the 29th Minute before the Ruts hit a quickfire double to secure the half time lead. Firstly, Ollie Hicks conjured a delightful leveller in the 34th minute following clever footwork and a deft finish and then in the 37th minute Paul Whitthread pounced at the end of a decent move to put the Ruts 2 – 1 ahead.

Tooting replied with a two goal rally of their own very early in the second half and despite chances for both sides to score again, the match was played out, with the final score 3 – 2 to Tooting Bec.

We wish the Bec all the very best in their Elite Title Quest next weekend.

‘The Long Good Friday’ 21 years ago on Good Friday 1996. What a day!

Old Rutlishians 3-0 Kingston Albion
Scorers: Jimmy Wilkes (2), Steve Jupp
5th April 1996 KDFL Teck Senior Cup Final
By Gavin Lennard

This was a great game from 21 years ago on Good Friday 1996. It was memorable for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was the biggest game in the Ruts short football history (then six years into our reformation). Secondly, it was the KDFL Centenary year and their showpiece Cup Final was played at a modern Kingstonian FC (normally at Hampton in those days). Thirdly, we were the complete underdogs really, our opponents Kingston Albion were a very good side and without doubt the strongest club in the KDFL at the time. This was our first season in the Premier Division and they had spanked us 4-1 earlier in the campaign and we held on for a 0-0 home draw the week before the final.

Anyway, the team played out of their skins that day and centre half Steve Jupp headed in a first half free kick from player/manager Gary Newcome’s free kick. Then young Whizz-Kid Jimmy Wilkes notched two stunning second half goals to secure a fine 3-0 victory.

A massive party ensued throughout the rest of the day, starting at the K’s bar, taking in the Old Ruts and finally onto Wimbledon and the Curry Royal – truly awesome.

It is terrific that we took a photo of every player with the cup at the Ruts midway through the mammoth session.

Result Round Up – Saturday 8th April 2017.

Well done to the 3rd XI for securing a much needed and very valuable 3 points today, as they beat Merton Social Res 2 – 0. The Ruts goals came courtesy of Ben Kennett and George Tidey.

Best wishes to any Ruts teams playing tomorrow.
