The 1st XI went goal crazy in the County Cup today, as they comprehensively overcame Worplesdon Phoenix FC 9 – 1 at Poplar Road. The Ruts came out of the blocks in an extremely lively fashion and they were a goal ahead in less than a minute, when Zak Graham deftly lobbed the keeper, following a Chris Beard interception which put him through on goal.
Then, on 6 minutes the Effervescent Paul ‘Whitto’ Whitthread fired home a Billy Liffen cross and Skipper Chris Beard then made it 3 – 0, with a header in the 24th minute.
Whitto then struck again for his brace in the 37th minute, after a good advantage from the Referee, after Zac Graham was fouled in the area.
Stand in Keeper Darren Honey went off injured midway through the half leaving Paul Tuckey to step up off the Bench to deputise further, and the Visitors managed to reduce the arrears with a consolation strike in the 43rd minute.
In the second half Zak Graham’s finishing totally killed the game off, as potent strikes in the 50th, 56th and 62nd minutes put the outcome well beyond any doubt.
Two further strikes effectively put the icing on the cake, as Chris Beard notched his second goal and brace in the 78th minute, before Zak struck a fitting rasper for his very impressive 5 goal haul from the game. Final Score 9 – 1. Best wishes to our opponents (who stayed for a few beers) for the rest of their Season.
The 2nd XI also secured a convincing victory as the won 4 – 1 at Chipstead Athletic FC. The Ruts goals came via Paul Gough, Steve Berry, Gary Wilton and Jack McGoldrick.
The only downside of the OR’s day, was the hefty 6 – 1 defeat suffered by the 3rd XI against Worcester Park ‘A’ FC. Scott Stoney notched the Ruts goal early on.
Best wishes to the Vets and Junior Teams tomorrow.
