Results Round Up – Saturday 8th February 2020.

We achieved a clean sweep, although it was a day of L’s and not W’s.

The 1st XI bowed out of the Surrey Cup at the Semi Final stage at Battersea Ironsides FC. Charlie Andrews scored the Ruts consolation goal. Good luck to BIFC in the Final.

The 2nd XI suffered a miserable day too, as they went out of League Junior Cup against Warlingham FC.

Joint Manager George Tidey reported ‘after a brilliant display last week, the 2s were looking to build on their performance in the cup. However, a decent save by our centre back saw us reduced to 10 men, just 10 minutes in to the game. This was a tough battle after the resulting penalty was scored and the visitors continued to put pressure on us. The match ended 4 – 0. So on to next week, back in the League’.

The 3rd XI went down 5 – 3 at Tooting Bec ‘B’ FC. Scorers TBC

The 4th XI put in a decent shift at Shelton Athletic FC. The lads bounded in to an early 3 – 0 lead, before conceding a penalty shortly before the break. After the interval the hosts levelled, before the Ruts managed to briefly restore their lead at 4 – 3. The hosts then upped their own performance and ended up winning 6 – 4. The Ruts can be proud of their overall display and rue 2 conceded penalties, plus sleepy defending at 2 corners for helping the points slip away. Sonnie and Adam both impressively bagged a brace each.

Just the 2 games played in the end today, which both resulted in hard fought victories. From the 2nd XI Camp, Joint Manager George Tidey reported as follows,

‘After a difficult period of cancelled matches and postponements, the 2nd XI came up against OB Clapham in the League Shield. When the teams last met we lost 2-1 going down to the final kick of the game. Today, the boys were unfortunate to go a goal behind, but went into the half time break at 1-1 against the wind. After the break, the 2nd XI responded well to my words and went ahead early. Two more goals followed with the match ending up a victorious 4-1.’

Tidey added ‘We face them in two weeks time and we’re neck and neck in the table. Plenty of games in hand so hopefully this is a psychological boost for us. The lads dug deep and deserved the win’, The Goalscorers were Kyle Moore, Toby Lempriere, Joe Baker and Alex Blenkinsop.

The 4th XI also secured a very credible 3 – 1 win against NPL ‘B’ FC. The match was closely fought throughout and the Visitors gained the early advantage as they hit the Ruts on the counter attack to take the lead.

Talented youngster Owura Appiah struck the Ruts level with a decent strike. Half time 1 – 1.

Appiah fired his second goal with a stunning long range effort after the break and then deservedly completed his hatrick with another good goal in the final stages.

Best wishes to the Junior Teams tomorrow.

Howard Meredith  (1967 – 2020)

Our Dear Friend and former Player Howard ‘H’ Meredith sadly passed away on Sunday the 12th of January 2020, with his loved ones by his side.

The BIG Man made 176 appearances for the OR’s, scoring 6 goals. Howard was the 1st XI Players Player of the Year in 1995/96, and also the Clubman of the Year in 2001/02.

H had incredibly skilful feet for a big man and he was a stylish & accomplished centre half, truly sublime on the ball. Realistically, he should have been playing at a higher level. However, we were fortunate that he loved playing at the Old Ruts with his mates instead.

H went on to manage the 1st XI for 2 Seasons once his playing days had ended. He was renowned for his very tongue in cheek post-match quotes to the Press Officer, many of which were hilarious, which epitomised his acutely dry and very sharp wit.

H was at his brilliant best speaking English in a totally awesome Dutch accent! It was effing superb and side-splittingly funny, it certainly tickled all of the lads on numerous occasions.

Our deepest thoughts and sincere condolences are with all of Howard’s family and friends at this incredibly sad and difficult time. Rest in Peace and free from pain mate. God Bless You.

Howard’s Funeral is at the North East Surrey Crematorium, Garth Road, Morden at 1.20pm on Tuesday the 4th February. His family invite his many friends to attend the Service and the Wake afterwards, which will be held at the Old Rutlishians Clubhouse, Poplar Road, Merton Park, London, SW19 3JS.

Results Round Up – Saturday 11th January 2020.

Pleasingly, the Ruts finally secured their first clean sweep of the Season, as the teams secured a trio of 2 – 1 wins.

The 1st XI beat Staines Lammas FC 2 – 1 thanks to goals from Graham Rolfe and Zak Graham. More details to follow.

The 2nd XI beat Parkside FC 2 – 1 in the League Cup, Joint Manager Jon Mapp reported that Joe Baker put the Ruts ahead following a decent team move immediately after the break. Toby Lempriere then doubled the Ruts lead with a headed goal, before the hosts reduced the deficit with the last kick of the match. In his post match summary, Jon Mapp quoted ‘the 2s won a feisty encounter which threatened to boil over. However, the Ruts kept their heads throughout the game, which proved decisive. Kyle Moore was our MOTM’

The 3rd XI also won 2 – 1 at Reigate Priory Res FC. Stand in Manager Paul Gough scored one of the goals, with Jamie Ayres notching the other.

The 4th XI did not have a Fixture this week.
Best wishes to the Junior teams tomorrow.
